The venue is a gracious music hall that would remind one of the setup of an elegant dinner theatre complete with high ceilings, great acoustics, tables for dining and seating close to a very approachable stage. Food and Drinks from the adjacent restaurant/bar are served before and during breaks. It was the perfect setting to enjoy this trio of…

Hello all. Thanks for your patience through April and May. Took some time off from playing. Came back with a great show at The Mockingbird playing with harmonica virtuoso Gary Green and of course Darrell Muller. You can check out a couple of the songs that night on youtube. I can’t thank those of you who came enough for making it a great night. Thanks also to Ted Pitney for opening the evening with some great new songs.
Been writing quite a bit and plan to go into the studio in August to put down the new songs. I have received a bunch of emails asking me about some of the new ones. I’m sorry there is nowhere to get them yet, but for those of you who asked, that’s why I’m gonna get back in to record.
I’ve got a run coming up with Bobby Houck of The Blue Dogs. July 15th at The Southern in Charlottesville. July 16th at Ashland Coffee and Tea in Ashland. July 17th Bowler’s Warf in Tidewater. Should be fun and I hope to see some of you there.

Let’s see. I’ve been writing a ton of songs recently which I’m really excited about. I’ll be playing a bunch of them on the upcoming run of shows. On Friday April Second I will be in Winston Salem opening for my friend Ellis Paul. He is one of the nations best singer songwriters, and he is an amazing performer. We will be at Fiddle and Bow concert series. The next night the two of us will be in Staunton Virginia at The Mockingbird. I will be joined by Bassist Darrell Muller.
The following weekend I have a FWB gig on Friday. Saturday, Darrell and I will make the small trip down to Bedford Virginia to play a concert series at The Bedford Public Library. Then finally on Sunday I will be in New York City at Arlenes Grocery for an hour long set starting at 9pm.
That’s about it. Hope you all are well and hope to see you in the next few weeks.

Well, it’s been a while since the last blog. I’m currently booking a few festivals for the summer season trying to put together a small tour to promote the new EP “Red Angels.” I have been writing a ton of new music with hopes of getting back into the studio and turning the EP into a full length record. We had an amazing show for New year’s at The Mockingbird in Staunton. If you haven’t been there yet, go. We had a sold out crowd. With me was Darrell, Andy, and a very special guest harmonica player Gary Green. Gary brought a great sound to our set and I’m workiong on booking some more shows with the four of us. That’s about it for now. Getting ready for 106.1 ’s corner Lounge this Thursday. It will air thursday at 8pm. Then I’m opening for Charlie Mars at the Southern on Friday, doors at 7pm. Thanks.

So we went out to Haunted Hallow studios and recorded a six song demo. By we I mean me, Darrell Muller, Sam Wilson, and Brian Jones. Just in case you didn’t know, Brian Jones is a serious bad ass. Really really good. Anyway, the session went way better than anticipated. So for those of you wondering if I have been writing and recording, I have.
We recorded live and for the first time ever I recorded my vocals and guitar at the same time. Not too standard I know, but it worked out well because it was no natural. I had sight lines to everybody (the studio is sick and maybe the greatest studio in the world-certainly the greatest studio I have ever been in) so that made for a much more reasonable situation concerning how we were recording this. I could see Sam the whole time and we have played so much together at this point that with just a nod or a head tilt we knew where we were going. Darrell, as always, showed up with some sick bass parts. He had done a number of gigs with me, and we were able to work a lot of the songs out. But, like the master he is, he showed up with a few surprises for everyone (and I mean bass surprises, not just the bourbon). And if you know Jonesy, you know he played the coolest shit on this planet.
If any of y’all are interested, I’ll bring a song or two to a show that you are at. Let me know.

I have received a number of emails asking me where the hell I’ve been and what, if anything, is coming up. So, I started this new blog thing to stay in touch with those of you who were nice enough to ask what I’ve been up too.
I don’t want to go into too much boring detail, but I got hit by KENNY G’S piano and as a result, had to get surgery on my neck. I was out for many months. That’s that.
Since I’ve been back, I have been writing a whole lot of music. Some of you have come to see Darrell Muller and I at Enoteca play a lot of this new material. These gigs have proven to be really amazing. We’ve had a lot of support down there. And, it’s helped Darrell and I get our shit together with the material. As a result, we are going into the studio (HauntedeHollow) to record with Sam Wilson and Brian Caputo. We had a rehearsal a few days ago that got us all pretty pumped to record. It should be a pretty amazing quartet sound.
Sop, that’s about it. I don’t have that many gigs coming up because I’m just getting everything back to normal. My health is getting there. Music is getting there. Our first session in August 4th, so that’s getting here soon. Check out the calender for the occasional show. Hopefully in the near future, there will be a lot more of them. ANd thanks for those of you who have bugged me to do this. I will update it often.

Self-Titled

Singer-songwriter Peyton Tochterman delivers eclectic pop rock tunes through a broad Americana pastiche. On his new self-titled disc his ever-evolving supergroup High Society features a cast of Charlottesville’s best players from a wide range of genres, including trumpet ace John D’earth, mandolin upstart Andy Thacker, fiddler Anne Marie Calhoun (Jethro Tull), accordionist Matty Metcalfe and Sons of Bill guitarist Sam Wilson. It makes for a dynamic stew that manages to harmoniously converge into a front porch jubilee around Tochterman’s soulful country growl.
Lyrically, Tochterman seems to always see the rainbow at the end of a dark tunnel. His content battles between dismal realities—societal vanity (Mama’s Genes”), commercial sprawl (“Battlefield Business Park”) and personal loss (“Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still”)—and unwavering optimism, which comes through in the sunny bounce of “All the Love” and the bluegrass charge of “What a Life.” Much like the group’s instrumentation, it’s a lesson in opposing forces making a sweet combination.

The New Record is out. After an incredible night at The Paramount Theater playing our CD release concert, PEYTON TOCHTERMAN AND HIGH SOCIETY is out. By it at Cd Baby and soon you will be able to buy it right here!

PEYTON TOCHTERMAN AND HIGH SOCIETY is creating new standards, new sounds, and new music for the modern times. With mandolin, drums and percussion, acoustic guitar and vocals, electric guitar, accordion, bass, and trumpet, HS is pushing the boundaries of acoustic music through an unusual combination of instruments and cutting edge social commentary. As Rhythm and Root’s Charlene Tipton notes: “The collective talents of High Society added a level of heart-pumping energy and superb musicianship to Bristol’s Rhythm & Roots Reunion that left fans literally panting for more! Their infectious and tasteful blend instruments emptied seats and had everyone up and dancing from the first note to the last!”

“Culling its members from the hidden gems in a bustling music scene, Peyton Tochterman And High Society tastefully combines focused song-writing with unusual instrumentation and stunning musicianship. The result is something uniquely satisfying, yet oddly familiar,” writes recording engineer Jack Gray.

This recording is energetic, original, and most assuredly uncompromised by the cookie cutter mentality that plagues much of today’s music.

We first happened upon Peyton Tochterman when he played with Shannon Worrell, Devon Sproule and Paul Curreri at Gravity Lounge’s fourth anniversary show back in June. We admit we were a little late to the game. He’s been playing around town for much longer than that, releasing both his debut record, The Personals, and an album by his bluegrass trio, Fair Weather Bums, in 2005.

Tochterman gathered some of Charlottesville’s best musicians, including trumpet player John D’earth, mandolin champ Andy Thacker, guitarist Sam Wilson and multi-instrumentalist Matty Metcalfe, to form Peyton Tochterman and High Society.

So what kind of sound comes out when you throw these talented musicians together? “People can’t usually place it,” says Tochterman. “It’s a strange acoustic world.” We can’t argue. Tochterman says he’s influenced by everything from angsty ’80s rockers The Replacements to bluegrass songwriter Norman Blake. Maybe if you mix up those ingredients and channel them through High Society’s trumpet, mandolin and accordion instrumentation, you’ll end up with the group’s sound.

Not to be mistaken for the famous Bing Crosby musical, Peyton Tochterman’s High Society will celebrate their new album with a CD release show at Paramount Theater on October 12.

It’s best, though, to hear it for yourself, which you’ll have the perfect chance to do on Friday, October 12 when Tochterman and High Society celebrate the release of their new CD with a show at the Paramount Theater. It’ll be one of the first times that the Paramount has featured local music, and we hope this is a sign of things to come. Sure, the theater is a great place to see Jeff Tweedy or Ryan Adams, but opening its doors to local acts earns the venue lots of Feedback brownie points.

And as if Tochterman’s line-up wasn’t already packed with enough goodness, Richmond drummer Brian Jones (who recently wowed us with his guitar quartet at the Tea Bazaar) will make the trip down I-64 to play drums for the Paramount gig.

Oh, and did we mention that recently returned songstress Shannon Worrell is slotted to open the show? This is one of those not-to-miss nights, for sure.

If you’re still not convinced, listen to Tochterman play live on the radio this week. He’ll be on 91.1 WJTU at 11am on October 10, on 106.1 The Corner at 1pm on October 11 and on 91.9 WNRN at 8am on October 12. -John Ruscher, C-ville Weekly
